Pasta, Chicken, and Pioneer Woman

Yep, what a fabulous combo.

Now that our Direct TV is back on, just in time for football season (note, we turn off Direct TV for 6 months, from about March until August...thanks for the fabulous suggestion Emily Gross!), my previously recorded shows of Pioneer Woman on Food Network on Saturday mornings are eagerly being watched by me when I'm not chasing a toddler.  And I've loved catching up on them.  She so inspires me to cook, and to try a new recipe here and there.

So here's what I've made of her easy and delicious dishes recently:

Picture courtesy of the Pioneer Woman.  Because she takes pretty food pictures, and I don't  :)

Delicious and easy.  I might have added some olive oil, or perhaps Ken's Lite Caesar dressing, as it needs a little vinagrette to go with it.

Enjoy your chicken and pasta.  Happy Eating!

2 Awesome Books

I just finished reading Nancy Wilson's

and am currently reading

Both are solid, Biblical, straightforward, concise books for wives and for mothers.  Both Andy and I were mentored by people in Auburn who highly advised books from Douglas and Nancy Wilson.  I thought I'd pass these awesome recommendations on to you!

18 Months

I have to say that 18 Months has been one of my favorite ages thus far.  While it can definitely have it's trying moments (as in, occasional brief temper tantrums emerge), Jackson is soaking up so much, repeating what we're saying, doing animal sounds, learning songs, chatting up a storm.

For my memory, here are some of the things he's doing:

1)  Transitioned with no problem from bottle to sippy cup.  One day I offered him his milk in a sippy cup and he took it no problem.  He's never looked back.  (He was previously only drinking water out of a sippy cup and milk out of a bottle.)

2)  He'll sing "Row Row" or "EIEI" if you ask him to sing a song.

3)  Words he's saying:
"Biii"  which means he wants a bite of whatever you're eating
"Cheeeeese"  which can mean Cheese or Please.  I'm still working on distinguishing
"Ka Ku" or something thereof means Thank You
I say Blueberries, Jackson says "Mmmmmm"
"Tu-er"  for Tucker (dog)
"Ta!" for Thomas (the Train, or our friend Thomas)
I say Doggie, He says "Woo woo!"
"Uh Oh" and "Ooooh Nooo" are very common phrases (but it beats whining!)
An occasional "W-Gull" for War Eagle  :)
"Bump bump" for bumping his head
I say Sissy and he'll repeat, although he doesn't know who "sissy" is yet
"Go go go"
"Tuck" for truck
"Choo Choo"
"Voom voom" whenever he sees a truck
Starting to notice airplanes overhead and pointing and imitating their noise

4)  The climbing is beginning.  Coffee table today.  Who knows what else tomorrow.

5)  Loves to dance.

6)  If he falls, Andy says "brush it off" and he brushes his stomach and smiles.

7)  Fearless swimmer (or drowner).  Literally, submerged totally in the baby pool, I rapidly and somewhat panicky scoop him up, and he's grinning from ear to ear, ready for another dunk.  Ah, so scary.  Swim lessons Summer 2013 here we come.

8)  Wants to eat anything and everything all.by.himself.  Don't help him or he'll let you have it.  (But sometimes if he hasn't finished his applesauce or yogurt, I can "airplane" it into his mouth with the spoon at the end of his feeding.)

9)  Will point to his various body parts when I ask.  Will sometimes obey commands and pick  things up if he feels like it.  Is learning the hand motions that go with "This Little Light of Mine" just from watching me sing and dance in the car.  Is obsessed with having the DVD car player down.  Doesn't matter if it's not on, but it must be down.  He points at the roof of the car and whines until I lower it.  Little Einsteins is our captivating movie of choice.  Just watched Cars 2 for the first time, and I've never seen him sit still for that long.

 Watching Cars 2

10)  Starting to wrestle with Tucker, and Tucker is playing back.

11)  Very into self-play.  I'm loving it.  Also will bring me books to read to him.  Loving that more.

Stacking all toys

12)  Turns in circles, grinning and making lots of noise, until he falls down.  Then he gets up and does it again.

Curtains

I have some beautiful silver sage Restoration Hardware Thai Silk curtains gracing my dining room right now.

I love them.  We bought them on sale (even better...), they first graced our master bedroom in our first home, and now they liven up our dining room.

However, whoever created Restoration Hardware Thai Silk Curtains obviously did not have the grimy hands of toddlers in mind.  (That can also go to say that whoever buys silk curtains is not thinking of cute toddler hands.)

Thus, my recent revelation that these curtains need to migrate back to a grown-up bedroom, and we need to get a kid-friendly set of curtains in our house.  I don't want to have to worry about curtains or reprimand little hands for wiping dog bowl water all over expensive curtains.  (Yes, you heard me right.  Jackson, when he's in a feisty mood, will play in Tucker's dog bowl, bring wet hands to mouth and lick them, then run and giggle to the curtains while I chase him with a dish towel to wipe said wet hands, usually hunting him down in the midst of yards and yards of Thai Silk curtains, following the sweet little giggles.)

These drapes were my inspiration.  I love these burlap Ballard Designs drapes almost as much as my Restoration Hardware drapes.  Then I started "pinning" and found many inspirations to make your own burlap drapes at a more budget-friendly price.

So, here is my attempt, copied from this site.

I found the standard tan burlap at Jo-Ann's on sale for $2.99/yard, so I bought 12 yards of it, estimating for 8 feet per panel (and needing 4 panels).  I have other fun ideas planned for the extra burlap fabric.

I also found the Stitch Wichery half off at Jo-Ann's.

Here's how my day went down at Jo-Ann's.  Imagine, pregnant lady with no make-up, very short hair in a teeny pony tail (yes, I got over 5 inches cut off with multiple short layers and can barely pull it in a ponytail), with a cute little 18 month old in the buggy.  Here's the conversation that ensued with the disgruntled fabric cutting lady there.

Me: I'd like 12 yards of this burlap please.

Disgruntled employee (DE):  Let me see if we have another bolt already opened.

Proceeds to bring a burlap of a slight different tan, verified by myself and yet another employee.  I kindly asked for the burlap I had brought over.

DE: (muttering under breath but very audible for me to hear) Looks like the same color to me!

(You get the picture.  I realize she's ticked. But she repeats several times to justify her own opinion and to attempt to prove me wrong.  And... I'm the ONLY customer at the counter, so it's not like I'm holding up a line or anything.)

DE:  What you going to do with this?

Me:  Make curtains

DE:  Mmmm, people doing the weirdest things with this.  I don't get it.  I'd never want this in my house.  Eww, the smell.

(And on and on and on)  I tried to explain about Ballard Designs, and she's still rambling, sometimes muttering incoherent paragraphs and at other times rambling about who knows what.  I honestly couldn't keep up with all she was saying.  And, I'm starting to slightly doubt my decision to make my own curtains and wondering why I just didn't go through Ballard, and maybe I should forget this, and will my house now reek of burlap???

Then DE found out they were going in MY house, and she was quiet.

I kindly thanked her and proceeded to wander around the store, all the while wondering if I'm crazy to attempt this project.

Then, a very classy grandmother stopped me, pointed to my burlap, and said, "I absolutely love this!  Where did you find this burlap in the store?"  Whew, sigh of relief.  Classy lady knew of the burlap rave hitting up stores, and she was thrilled I was making curtains.

This is no slam against Jo-Ann's at all, as I shop there often and love the store.  I could wander the aisles for hours.  I just happened to catch Disgruntled Employee at an off time, and my attempts at educating her on the latest trends were simply futile.

All that to say, my house does NOT smell of burlap (which is a powerful statement for a pregnant women with a highly sensitive sense of smell to say), and the curtains were as easy as the blog claimed, and I'm perfectly content with my kid-friendly yet grown-up curtains.

I made these drapes for around $10 per panel.  Score!  (I already had the rods up, but I did have to go buy clips for the drapes from Home Depot.  But I'm not counting that added cost to these curtains.  But if I had to be precise and include the clips in the panel price, then these panels were about $18 each.  I'd say that's still awesome, considering I was about to spend $140 for 4 panels from Ballard Designs!)

This morning, Andy hung these curtain rods I bought for a really inexpensive price at Target, now gracing our master bedroom.

(Bottom two pictures are not excellent shots, but you get the idea.  And yes, my bed is stripped bare because I'm washing sheets now.  Whew, if this is nesting, and I'm only halfway through my pregnancy, I could get alot done to my house!)

One funny note about making these curtains...I can't cut in a straight line.  I don't know what my problem is when I'm cutting fabric, but I can't do it.  So I had a little bit more trouble trying to get my burlap even.  So don't look too closely if you come visit my house.  I was cracking myself up at my inability to cut straight across.  Practice makes perfect?  Maybe?

Also, Jo-Ann carries burlap in a beautiful white ivory color, which I seriously contemplated (and then I remembered cute but grimy toddler hands).  They also have a pretty chocolate brown color, but I thought that might look a little dark in our dining room.  I do love how the burlap allows some sunlight to peek through, more than my lined silk curtains did, so I'm hoping our dining room will look a little brighter now.

Please pass on any and all ideas for my leftover burlap!  I've contemplated making a fun burlap pillow (but nervous about it spreading burlap particles all over my white bedspread), burlap bed skirt (but I'd need to go buy more burlap as I only have about 3 yards left), burlap shower curtain, etc.  I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Happy Sunday Morning

Happy Sunday morning!

No reason for this post, other than a few this and that tidbits.

1) At midnight last night, trying to fall asleep, I was lamenting what I would watch once the Olympics were over? What would keep me up until 11 p.m. every single night, waiting in anticipation to see the results of these amazing athletic events?  Enter into mind:  football!  Yes ma'am, and that got me excited.  Anticipating the excitement of your favorite team entering the field  (and that would be the Auburn Tigers entering Jordan Hare Stadium in our household), crisp fall temperatures (a much-needed alleviation of searing summer temperatures for this pregnant momma), and, wait, all things fall...including pumpkin pancakes!

Yes, I pulled out my last can of canned pumpkin that I've been hoarding until pumpkin hits the grocery stores again.  And I used it to make these delicious pancakes this morning, from scratch, so easy and delicious.

2)  I'm reading this book and am really enjoying it.  Thanks Emily for the suggestion!

3)  Every morning I listen to this music.  Classic hymns, done by Chris Rice, and many mornings this is the only time I get to intentionally reflect on Jesus and His goodness, while prepping Jackson's breakfast.  Plus, I'm exposing my son to wonderful hymns.  Win-win.

4) We've been having fun playing with this water ball outside.  Enjoying simple days of summer.

5) Loving this children's author.  I've just recently started checking out children's books from the library (and in doing so, keep a very close eye on Jackson to make sure he isn't tempted to rip any pages to examine the pictures closer), and I've been amazed at how many silly, pointless books are out there.  But I stumbled upon this adorable book in the library, and it has captivating pictures, uses fairly big words for Jackson's age (which is good, he needs to hear them), and has a good moral message.  Highly recommend all of his books!

Happy Sunday morning to you all!

Shepherd's Pie

Shepherd's Pie in this heat, you might ask?

Yep, I made it, and my boys devoured it, and I've had several people ask me for the recipe.

So here you go!  Quick, easy, nutritious dinner idea.

Recipe found on this blog (and I followed her suggestion for the carrots), and the ingredients found here.

Stain Fighter

I'm sure many of you with kids are fighting the inevitable battle of numerous and repeated stains on their clothing.  It's worth the "battle" for me because I want to keep Jackson's (and #2's) clothes for future children, and not spend a fortune on their wardrobes.

That being said, I know the ultimate secret for fighting stains.

Yep folks, powder Biz.  Mrs. Ann, the lady who taught me to smock and sew, and who has treasures upon treasures of heirloom clothing for her grandchildren, swears by this little beauty.  And it really does work!

Soak your outfit in a bucket of Biz with hot water, and change the water and detergent daily until the stain comes out.  I've been known to soak outfits up to a week, with occasional washings (but no dryings) in between to see if the stain has come out.

I recently had a "nesting" moment and went through all of Jackson's baby clothes to see what outfits were gender neutral enough for Baby Girl to wear, and I did notice some yellow spit up stains that will have to find their way to the Biz bucket.

Hope that this helps you in the never-ending war on stains.

Happy Washing :)
